A Florida lottery player who tried his luck with a $5 scratch-off ticket was able to beat the odds of 1 in 3.8 million to win the game's top prize.
On Thursday this week, the Florida Lottery confirmed that Roger Shackelford, a 67-year-old Valrico resident, won one of the top prizes from the Millionaire Maker scratch-off game.
Speaking to Lottery officials, the Hillsborough County resident confirmed that he purchased the winning ticket from Publix at 3461 Lithia Pinecrest Road in Valrico.
The man decided to try his luck with the $5 scratch-off ticket but was pleasantly surprised to win the game's top prize for a $1m payday.
The odds of winning the top prize from the Millionaire Maker scratch-off game are 1 in 3,834,630. Regardless of those odds, it was the man's lucky day as he turned a $5 ticket into a life-changing prize.
Recently, the Valrico resident visited the Florida Lottery's Tampa District Office to claim the big win.
The fortunate man decided to receive a one-time lump sum payment of $640,000.
The lucky man did not reveal if he had any plans regarding the unexpected windfall.
The Millionaire Maker scratch-off game is one out of many scratch-offs offered by the Florida Lottery.
Offering overall odds of 1 in 3.99, the $5 ticket grants players a chance to win a prize between $5 and $1m.
When the scratch-off game was initially launched, there were a total of six prizes of $1m each.
However, in light of the recent win, only one top prize remains in play.
A tier-two prize from the Millionaire Maker scratch-off game pays $10,000.
The popular game initially offered 138 such prizes but now, 25 remain up for grabs. The odds of winning a $10,000 prize from the scratch-off ticket are 1 in 166,723.
A tier-three prize would award players $5,000 and the odds of winning such a prize are 1 in 657,365. There are seven prizes of $5,000 each remaining in play.
Across the lower tiers, between $1,000 and $5, there are many more prizes that remain in play from the Millionaire Maker scratch-off game.
