  • The man was surprised by a life-changing $1m prize after matching five winning numbers from Powerball
  • This isn't the first Powerball winner for this month in Maryland

A man from Baltimore who stopped at a grocery store and decided to give his luck a try was surprised by a life-changing prize.

On Monday, the Maryland Lottery confirmed that the fortunate winner matched five winning numbers from the Powerball drawing on June 2 for a tier-two prize of $1m.

The winner nearly missed his chance to buy Powerball tickets after having doubts

While the Lottery confirmed that the winner is from Baltimore, his identity will likely forever remain a mystery.

The fortunate man has an interesting story about how he decided to buy Lottery tickets.

The man had stopped at the Safeway store in Parkville to buy some fruit.

Although initially, he was thinking of buying some lottery tickets, he had some doubts and decided against it.

Then, just before going out of the store, the man overheard a person talking about Powerball.

This is when the Baltimore man decided to come back and try his luck by buying one Mega Millions, two Powerball and five Cash4Life tickets.

Surprisingly, one of the two Powerball tickets turned out as a winner of the life-changing $1m prize.

The Baltimore man had visited a friend a few days after the purchase and heard that a ticket sold at Safeway in Parkville won the tier-two prize of $1m.

The man immediately went back home to check his tickets and to his surprise and shock, he was the holder of the winning ticket.

After realizing he had just won $1m, the man called his mother to give her the good news.

From the Powerball drawing on June 2, the fortunate winner matched all white balls, 1, 7, 44, 57 and 61, and took home a tier-two prize.

Had he matched correctly the Powerball number as well, the man would have won the jackpot, which was an estimated $20m or $9m cash value at the time.

Selling the winning ticket, the store will benefit from a $2,500 bonus from the Lottery.

Not the first tier-two win from Powerball in Maryland recently

The latest win marks the second tier-two prize from Powerball won in Maryland recently.

Earlier this month, on June 11, a grandfather from Baltimore County, who had matched five winning numbers from the game's drawing on June 4, collected his $1m lottery prize.

At the time, the winner said that he wanted to share the lottery windfall with his children. He also admitted to planning to spend some of the money and then save the rest.

At the time of writing, the Powerball jackpot is an estimated $101m or $45.7m cash option.

The popular game's next drawing is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
