It is not uncommon for the gambling sector to be targeted by criminals, who may attempt to scam or defraud individuals out of money or try to obtain sensitive information.
On Thursday this week, the Florida Lottery warned the public that scam phone calls continue to grow and asked players to be on high alert when receiving suspicious calls, messages or emails.
Notably, the Lottery explained that winnings can only be claimed by mail or in person at one of its offices, considering that the player has a valid winning ticket.
Moreover, the Florida Lottery stressed that it will never contact a player over a phone call, social media or via text message to notify them about recent wins.
Equally as important, the Lottery said that it would never ask players for money in order to claim a prize.
The Lottery encourages Florida players who receive suspicious calls, messages or emails to cease any contact immediately and refrain from providing any financial or personal information.
"The Florida Lottery will never call and ask for your personal information," a statement from the Florida Lottery reads.
In addition, players are encouraged to report such fraudulent attempts by calling (850) 487-7730, the Florida Lottery’s Division of Security or at 1-800-HELP-FLA, the number of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
According to the Florida Lottery, some scammers may attempt to obtain sensitive personal or financial information, or request money as "upfront payment for taxes," saying to their victims that they have won large lottery prizes.
John F. Davis, the Florida Lottery's Secretary, said about the unlawful activities: "These scams are not only deceitful – they're dangerous."
Moreover, Davis pointed out: "We want to remind our players that the Florida Lottery does not charge fees to claim prizes, and you should never provide your Social Security number, bank details, or make any form of payment in response to a call or message claiming you've won."
