A Delaware man who was stuck in traffic and crossed the state line into Maryland to buy something to drink was surprised by a hefty lottery prize.
On Wednesday, the Maryland Lottery confirmed that a Delaware resident scored $50,000 from its popular scratch-off game, Money Bags.
The fortunate lottery player admitted that he frequently buys tickets.
However, on the day that he purchased the winning Money Bags ticket from Thirsty's in Delmar, he had other plans.
The Delaware man said that he crossed the state line into Maryland because the traffic in the area he was traveling through was really bad.
Although the man had tried to stop to buy a drink earlier, the traffic was terrible, which is why he waited and then crossed into Maryland.
In an interview with an official from the Maryland Lottery, the man said: "There’s no real reason why I bought a ticket then. The idea just sort of popped into my mind."
Recalling the moment he was stuck in traffic and then winning the $50,000 prize shortly after, the man said: "It was annoying then, but looking back, that traffic was one heck of a blessing."
Speaking about the moment he realized he had just won $50,000, the man said he felt relieved but then couldn't believe what had just happened.
The lucky man's girlfriend used the Maryland Lottery's app to check and confirm the $50,000 win.
The winner told a Lottery official that he plans to pay bills with a portion of the winnings.
With what's left, the man said that he will help family members.
Each Money Bags ticket costs $10 and grants players a chance to win a prize between $10 and $250,000.
At the launch of the scratch-off game, there were a total of five top prizes of $250,000 each. Now, three such prizes remain in play.
On the other hand, when the Maryland Lottery first launched the Money Bags ticket, there were four tier-two prizes of $50,000 each.
After the most recent win, now, only one $50,000 tier-two prize is up for grabs.
A tier-three prize from the popular scratch-off game awards $10,000 and there are 10 such prizes remaining in play.
Within the lower tiers, between $1,000 and $10, there are thousands of prizes outstanding.
The overall odds of winning any prize from the $10 ticket are 1 in 3.50.
