The eye-watering $207m Powerball jackpot in California has been won during the May 31, 2025, drawing, with one lucky soul bagging the whole sum.
As is customary for such big wins, the California Lottery has released more details about the events surrounding the ticket’s purchase as well as the person who bought it.
For starters, the anonymous person purchased their ticket at a 7-Eleven shop on WoodmanAvenue in Arleta, Los Angeles. The store is definitely in luck because a prize that big would mean that the shop itself is set to get $1m in bonus payout from the lottery.
The ticket was the only one to get all the winning numbers correctly, as well as the Powerball number of 13 in that eventful draw. The regular numbers were 1, 29, 37, 56, and 68. Whoever the winner is, they now have a choice to make, providing that they can find their ticket or are even aware of this major development.
Whoever won would have two options to claim the eye-watering reward, by either choosing to cash out the entire available sum to them, which amounts to $92.5m after state and federal taxes have their cut, or go for a slightly higher annuity over 30 years and receive the full amount more or less.
However, for any of this to happen, the person will have to step forward within the allocated deadline, which is 180 days from the date of the drawing. Not much else is known about the winner(s), and there has been no official report about them claiming the prize.
Nevertheless, it’s not unusual for big-time lottery winners to first seek legal and financial advice before they move to claim the award. Most winners usually step forward in the first few weeks, although it’s not unusual for some people to wait even longer.
Recently, a man in Kentucky won the $167m jackpot. He was arrested only days after his name was announced as the winner in Florida after he allegedly assaulted an officer of the law.
