A man from Bolivia in North Carolina, who received lottery tickets as a gift and decided to give his own luck a try, was surprised by a life-changing prize.
The North Carolina Education Lottery confirmed that the fortunate Bolivia resident won a tier-two prize from the $10 Million Spectacular ticket for a $1m payout.
Speaking to an official from the Lottery, the lucky winner admitted that some weeks ago, he received lottery tickets for his birthday as a gift.
The man said that while he had never played lottery games before, this gift pushed him into giving it a try.
The fortunate man purchased his $50 ticket for the $10 Million Spectacular game at Han-Dee Hugo's at Southport-Supply Road Southeast in Bolivia.
"The juices were flowing so I chose that one," the man said jokingly.
After scratching off the ticket, the Bolivia resident thought that he won $50.
To his surprise and disbelief, he in fact won a tier-two prize of $1m.
"I couldn’t believe it when I saw how much it really was. It was wild," the man admitted.
When he was asked about his plans for the unexpected windfall, the lucky man said he intends to help his family.
The fortunate winner visited the North Carolina Education Lottery headquarters recently to claim his big win.
Similar to other prizes of such size, the man was presented with a choice to either collect the full $1m prize via annuity payments of $50,000 per year for 20 years, or take home a one-time lump sum of $600,000.
Not unexpectedly, the winner selected the latter option.
After the applicable state and federal taxes, the fortunate player's bank account increased by $430,514.
Players who want to try their luck with the $10 Million Spectacular ticket can win a prize between $50 and $10m.
Each ticket costs $50 and the odds of winning any prize are 1 in 3.11.
Winning the top prize of $10m has odds of 1 in 3,255,582, and while there were five such prizes in play initially, two remain up for grabs.
After the recent $1m tier-two win, there are two such prizes remaining in play.
The odds of winning $1m from the $50 scratch-off ticket are 1 in 813,895.5.
On the other hand, the odds of winning a tier-three prize of $100,000 are the same and out of a total of 20 such prizes, four remain in play.
Many more prizes in the lower tiers, between $50,000 and $50, are also up for grabs.
