An army veteran from Arizona had the time of his life following a one-million-dollar win at a local casino, which he hadn’t planned. He has his dog and a last-call cancellation from the dog sitter to thank.
This is the story of Michael H. and his wife, Betty, who turned up at the Gila River Resorts & Casino on Saturday, May 3, to try and make the best of their situation after they found out that a planned trip to Rocky Point would not be happening after all, because their dog sitter had cancelled on them at the last minute.
And so, Mike and Betty headed over to Santan Mountain to try their luck at their familiar venue – they have been regular players, but didn’t mean to play last week.
They were simply forced to. However, it would all take a turn for the better after Michael decided to give his luck a shot at a Wheel of Fortune slot machine and was surprised to see the prize amount displayed on the screen - $1,033,590 out of the blue.
He shared that it had been the first time he won such a huge amount, or even close to it. For the time being, it’s not clear what the couple would do with the money, although they are already planning on a few things – first is to have some of that money put towards a new home.
Besides that, the remainder will most likely be saved for travel expenses, as their children and grandchildren do not live in Arizona anymore, meaning that they would like to be able to visit more often.
The casino also celebrated the achievement, with an official statement reading that Michael’s win was the fourth million-dollar jackpot to have been awarded at the Gila River casino properties.
"We couldn’t be happier for Michael and Betty. Their story is a perfect example of the kind of connection we strive to create with every guest,"Michael West, GM of Santan Mountain, said in a statement.
